How loan apps work in Kenya
Loan apps are digital lenders that assess you from your phone — your ID, M-Pesa activity and repayment history — and disburse cash straight to your M-Pesa, usually within minutes. There’s no collateral and no branch visit. In return, limits start small (often KES 500–3,000) and grow as you repay on time, and interest is charged per short term rather than per year, so it looks small but adds up fast if you repay late.
How we compare and score apps
We rank each app on the factors that actually matter to a borrower:
- Loan limit — how much you can realistically access, starter and maximum.
- Cost — interest and any facilitation or processing fees, per term.
- Speed — how fast approved funds hit your M-Pesa.
- CRB policy — whether a listing blocks you, and whether they report defaults.
- Trust — CBK licensing, track record and user experience.
A note on safety: a genuine licensed lender never asks for an upfront fee before disbursing your loan. If an app demands a “registration” or “processing” payment first, it’s a scam — close it. See our guide to legit loan apps in Kenya.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best loan app in Kenya?
There’s no single best — it depends on your limit, how fast you need the money, and whether you’re listed on CRB. Tala and Branch are the most established with the highest limits; Fuliza and M-Shwari are the most convenient (no app); Hustler Fund is the cheapest. Compare them in our table above.
Which loan app gives money instantly in Kenya?
Most app-based lenders (Tala, Branch, Zenka) disburse to M-Pesa within minutes of approval. Fuliza is instant because it’s an overdraft on M-Pesa itself. See our fastest loan apps page.
Which loan apps don’t check CRB in Kenya?
Government and some newer apps are more lenient — Hustler Fund and Fuliza don’t require a clean CRB record. Most private apps do check and report to CRB. See our loan apps without CRB page.
Are loan apps in Kenya safe?
Licensed digital lenders regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) are legitimate. Avoid any app that asks for an upfront “registration fee” before disbursing, or that isn’t CBK-listed. Our legit loan apps page explains how to tell.
How do I increase my loan limit?
Borrow small amounts and repay on time — every app grows your limit with a good repayment history. Keeping your M-Pesa active also helps for M-Shwari and KCB M-Pesa.
